The Charleston Jazz Academy (previously named the Leonard School of Music) provides a high quality, comprehensive music education that develops personal confidence, builds a tradition of community, and instills a life long passion for music.

There are three services that we provide to the community: private lessons, twice weekly band programs at various schools in the area, and group classes held at our facility. We offer private instruction on all band instruments, piano, and guitar. We currently teach at four private schools which are unable to hire their own band instructor.  Also, we participate in an elementary public school after-school program and instruct two homeschool bands. To supplement our instruction, we offer various levels of concert bands, jazz bands, and guitar and percussion ensembles at our facility. All of our offerings are extended to any school age musician including students who attend public school band programs but enroll at LSM in order to receive additional and advanced training. Our typical student is in the 4th through 8th grades and currently enrolled at one of the schools where we provide band. Some schools have multiple levels of classes. For most of  our students, the Academy is the only local opportunity for a variety of band instruction. Celebrating over 70 years of success, one of our founding tenets is to offer full and partial band tuition scholarships to a limited number of students each year.  Centrally located in North Charleston, the Charleston Jazz Academy follows the academic school year and offers summer instruction as well. Formed in 1945 as a sole proprietorship by Patrick Leonard, his son Daniel J. Leonard acquired the business in 1970. In 2010, the Leonard School of Music became incorporated and in 2012 was awarded 501c3 nonprofit status.  In 2017, the Leonard School of Music merged with Charleston Jazz to become the Charleston Jazz Academy.
